GRANDPA

GRANDPA

Grandpa talked often of the wonderful life he and Grandma were fortunate enough to share.  He was proud of his longhorn cattle, his outstanding horses, his beautiful ranch, his long list of loyal friends and most of all he was proud of and so thankful for his family.  He always told me that Grandma could turn a rathole into a home and have supper on the table all by the time he came home from work on the first day of a new job and in these recent years, he knew it was the care he received from her that made his life as comfortable as it was.  he often reminisced about the years they spent raising their kids, my mom and uncle, and always said they were the best years of his life.  Having grandchildren and great grandchildren only enhanced his pride in his family.
A few of the “best things I learned from Grandpa” were-
•Always work hard-you can never go wrong from a hard days work
•Whiskey goes good in anything
•You can never eat too many “fried taters”
•Don’t crawl out on a 20 foot pipe to fetch water if you don’t want to get wet
•You CAN eat pudding without a spoon
•Sometimes it does take all day to get 25 cattle through one gate
•Don’t cuss the rain!
•Only wet saddle blankets can make a really good horse

We cannot wish back the sick man Grandpa had become, but, as he often asked us to do after he got sick, I ask for any of you that ever knew him-Remember him “How he used to be!”
And a true cowboy does not go anywhere without his horse, and so Booger, his good old ranch horse, died just after his funeral.  Guess Grandpa came back for him.
